Chess: The New Craze in Australia

Chess in Australia is witnessing incessant growth in popularity. It’s losing its uncool tag for the good as playing chess has shown many brain benefits. In fact, there are a number of academies giving coaching for Chess Sydney and many other parts of the country.

Played by people of all ages and genders, chess doesn’t have a retirement age. Anecdotal stories from players; and studies by organizations all show that chess significantly improves cognitive skills. The game involves the use of both sides of brain ensuring its overall and fast development.

Here are 5 great reasons why both parents and teachers want children to start playing the game early:

1.    Improve memory: Chess is a complicated game with lot of opening combinations. Lengthy moves and game patterns are memorized by players to get an edge in the game. Some players even observe the opponent’s tactics for future recall. Focused effort to remember so many difficult patterns makes a player’s memory automatically sharper.

2.    Improve Creativity: Chess is a challenging game as no two games are similar. Players need to continually come up with new combinations to confuse the opponent and win the game - in process developing the creative skills of the player.

3.    Improve Concentration: In chess, a player is not required to announce his/her move and in fact the opponent can take advantage of the player’s distraction and make a surreptitious move - gaining an edge in the game. Distraction during the game can cost the player his game. As one develops patience and concentration in the game, they become his/her natural traits.

4.    Calms Aggression: Chess requires the players to be patient and focused - traits which over a period of time can calm aggressive attitudes.

5.    Improves IQ: As it improves brain development - on both sides, it naturally improves IQ. In fact, many studies have shown that with everything else bring similar, kids who play chess have higher IQ than kids who play other games.

Chess is a game of strategy. It helps develop the players’ brains such that they are able to focus, foresee and plan not just the game but academics and other aspects of their life also.
